Deepdive into the Pantheon - My Fantasy Setting's Lore

Say your character wants to worship the fire deity. Then what? How deep are the implications of this choice?

Whatever level you want them to be.

Level 1:

You pledge to serve Geminyx, the Goddess of Fire and Compassion. She is one of 15 deities in the Pantheon who, together, are responsible for maintaining Creation.

You learn that a kind word warms people’s hearts, where the truth can leave them cold. Fire is one of the fundamental elements of reality and a powerful tool.

Each morning, you trace the symbol of Geminyx on any surface. You’ll know you did it right when it glows. You’re not sure whether that’s a sign of a blessing from Geminyx, or it means this ritual provides her with power.

Level 2:

You are an Initiate in the Temple of Geminyx. You learn that Geminyx has a rivalry with two other deities - Ry’itas the God of Truth and Light, and Ondola the Goddess of Deception and Gemstones. You have standing orders to sabotage their Temples, steal their artefacts and educate their followers.

Level 3:

You learn Geminyx fights in the Cosmic War of the Sun - one of five eternal conflicts that shape the Material Plane and beyond. Geminyx and her rivals each embody some aspect of the Sun. Three-way war between them is inevitable.

You also learn each deity is either a deity of Order, Chaos or Evil. Geminyx is a Chaotic Goddess, fighting against the stifling Order of Truth and the corrupting Evil of Deception.

Level 4:

You have pondered the mystery of the Cosmic Wars being battles between Order, Chaos and Evil… but not Goodness. This is because Goodness is so fundamental that no deity can embody it. Order and Chaos are different manifestations of Goodness, where Evil is its inversion.

The Pantheon didn’t create the world - they simply embody and maintain it. None of the deities represent Goodness, only reflections of it. This tells you the gods - powerful though they may be - are not the ultimate power in Creation.

Even so, fire cleanses, compassion heals and Geminyx is powerful. You continue to serve her, to advance her grand projects and battle her enemies. She respects your choice, granting you greater portions of her magic. Fire bends to your will. You can consecrate new lands and found Temples to your goddess.

Level 5:

Deities are fallible. You have known that for a while, even if you haven’t said so out loud.

Now, you are fully aware of their limitations.

Each deity eclipses your power more than your power eclipses an ant’s. Even so, they are not unique. Other beings are powerful enough to challenge the deities - Demon Lords, the rulers of the Fey, the Great Serpents, the Elementals, the lords of the great vampire clans…

Then there are entities that eclipse even their power - the Far Princes, the Ancient Ones…

You see Geminyx for what she is - formidable and essential for maintaining the world, yet beset by enemies and dangers beyond your comprehension. You serve Geminyx not because she rewards you for it, but because she needs you.
